Many visitors immediately head east after arriving on this wonderful island, through the flower-freckled meadow land of the interior to the resort of Cala en Forcat, Cala en Bosch and Cala Galdana. Most of them only return to the west when it is time to trundle up the airplane steps, so they sadly missed out the interesting capital Mahón (or Maó), with the second deepest natural harbour in the world (after Pearl Harbour), and a turbulent history due to the many seaborne conflicts between the Spanish, British and French that all tried to gain control of this strategically positioned naval base.
